Preparing Your Child for University: Part 4

How can my child go about choosing a University?
The type of institution best suited to your child depends on his or her individual needs and talents. Your child can begin focusing on the choice of a university by considering the following questions:
  • Why do I want to go to university?
  • What do I hope to achieve in university?
  • Do I have some idea of what I want to study or for which job I want to prepare?
  • Do I want to live at home or live on campus?
  • Would I be happier at a small or large university?

How much does a university education cost?
Under recent changes by the government, universities are able to charge a tuition fee up to £3,000 a year, for students starting on a new course from September 2006. The amount charged will depend on the university, so it is best to check directly with them. However, depending on your child’s personal circumstances and your annual household income, your child may be able to apply for:
  • A non-repayable Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant
  • Bursaries and scholarships from your university
Extra help is also available if your child:
  • Has a disability or specific learning difficulty
  • Has dependent children or adults
Your child can apply for a tuition fee loan of up to £3,000 to cover the cost of the tuition fee - this will not depend on your household’s financial circumstances. They can also apply for a maintenance loan; which depends on if they live at home, or not; where they will study; and your household income. The maximum value that can be received varies, depending on your circumstances. If your household is in the lower income bracket, then your child could apply for a non-repayable maintenance grant.
