Children and the Internet

The internet is a vast resource of information which can help children learn about the world around them, and interact with many people from different backgrounds. Millions of children go online every day - the majority are safe, most of the time. But, just like in the real world, there are things that you would never want children to see, and people that they never should talk to if you could see them. The internet makes it easy to hide the truth, or pretend to be someone else. So do not take any risks.

The best way to keep your children safe is to teach them, and make sure that they understand the dangers, and follow some common sense rules to keep out of trouble.
  • Never trust anyone you do not know on the internet, either by telling them personal details, or by exchanging files/pictures. Be as careful online as you are out in the street. Giving out details of your friends or family over the internet, such as where you live, what you do, and where you go with friends - anything that identifies who you or anyone you know are can put you or them in danger.
  • Don't ever reply to threats made by email, or within a chat room - simply by deleting the email, or ignoring the poster, should make who ever is sending the messages leave you alone, as they are not getting a reaction. If the problem persists, report the offender to their ISP, or to the chat room admin. Sending details of what has been happening can lead to the offender being banned from using email, or that chat room again.
  • Don’t be tempted to do anything that might hurt other people’s feelings and get you into trouble while you are on the internet. Remember to respect other people’s privacy and mind your manners. You are responsible for your behaviour online. Remember, typing in capitals is deemed as shouting on the internet - which means that others may ignore you, or will not help you if required.
  • Don't download any illegal material over the internet - this includes films, music, and software programs which you are getting for free, where normally you would pay to use them. These items are subject to copyright, and if caught, you can be subject to a fine, or a prison sentence. People are caught every day, so do not think that you can get away with it.
  • Making some sort of an agreement about how long you will stay on the internet for and what you are doing on there, will help you manage your time more effectively, and encourage cooperation between children and parents. You are not giving up your privacy, as you are just making life easier and safer for everyone. Parents are more likely to trust children, if they kept in touch with their children's internet activities. Children can also show their parents exactly what they do on the internet, and show how helpful and fun it is.
We are not saying that children cannot use the internet, just help show them how to stay safe online, and enjoy using it along with the millions of other people. Think U Know has more information about children and the internet.
