A computer connected to the internet without a firewall can be hijacked in just a few minutes by a hacker (someone who does not have authorised access to your computer, and in the vast majority of cases is someone you do not know). The only way to make your computer 100% secure is to turn it off or disconnect it from the internet.
The real issue is how to make your computer 99% secure when it is connected. Not having firewall protection is like leaving your car running with the doors unlocked and the keys in it, which a thief might interpret as "please steal me". Stated another way, when was the last time you handed a stranger your wallet and encouraged them to take your drivers license, cash and credit cards?
Locking a car, by installing a security system makes stealing a car more difficult. Internet security and privacy products provide adequate protection by making it difficult for these hackers to take control of your computer and steal your personal information - such as your address, and credit card details.
Sometimes the operating system you use could have security loop holes, allowing unauthorised access to your computer. For this reason, you should always keep your computer's operating system up to date.
In order to make your computer secure, you should make sure your computer has a firewall installed. Windows XP has a built-in firewall for each dialup or network connection. You can turn on the XP firewall, by following the below instructions;
- Click Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications>Network Connections.
- In the Network Connections Window, right click on your internet/network connection.
- From the drop-down menu, select Properties then select the Advanced Tab.
- Tick the Box located under "Internet Connections Firewall" and select OK to close the Properties Window.
This is the easiest way to provide basic protection for your PC. Whether you use Windows XP or not, you should also consider a commerical firewall product - browse through a selection of firewall products. Alternatively, the highly popular ZoneAlarm offers a basic free version of it's firewall software - which you can download to use.
